 Make Their Day!
Employee Recognition That Works

By Cindy Ventrice
with foreword by Robert Levering

"This is no ordinary management book. Cindy Ventrice has done her research. She’s looked at a variety of companies and interviewed dozens of managers to look beneath the surface. There are many books on employee recognition, but this one is by far the best."          —Robert Levering, coauthor of Fortune’s annual
"100 Best Companies to Work for in America"

In MAKE THEIR DAY, you will learn about recognition that works—recognition that is meaningful, memorable, and positively impacts morale and productivity.  In researching this book, author Cindy Ventrice asked employees all around the country, in many diverse work environments, “What kind of recognition makes your day?” They told her what really matters to them and what they view as a waste of time and money.

In MAKE THEIR DAY! you’ll learn:

  • Why much of the billions of dollars currently spent on recognition is wasted.

  • What the four elements are of recognition that works.

  • Who should be giving recognition.

  • How to create the most impact.

  • Why recognition should never be an item on a manager’s ‘to do’ list.

Today’s managers are busy people faced with unbelievable frustrations and challenges. Typically, recognition ends up at the bottom of their lists of things to do—they never get to it. This is a mistake because done right, recognition transforms the workplace and increases productivity and profits, ultimately making the manager’s job easier. Recognition should be the header on every manager’s ‘to do’ list.

In MAKE THEIR DAY! you’ll discover tips from highly successful organizations and managers who know what it takes to make someone’s day:

Tip #1       Recognition begins the moment a new hire walks in the door.
                 (Plante & Moran)

Tip #2       Recognition programs are only effective if management works to
create mutual trust, respect, and appreciation. (Remedy)

Tip #3       Recognition is built on strong work relationships.
                 (The Container Store)

Tip #4       Recognition is an effective way to reinforce values and produce
                 results. (Pella Window & Door)

Drawing on dozens of real-life examples, MAKE THEIR DAY! shows that effective recognition is more about integrating recognition into the daily routine of the workplace, and less about ‘special events.’ It outlines the keys elements of effective recognition—praise, opportunity, respect, and thanks—and explains why good working relationships are at the core of all effective recognition. MAKE THEIR DAY! shows how everyone within an organization can contribute to the process of developing recognition practices that create the meaningful relationships that employees need and want.
